We have a designated workstation for the chemical and biological analysis of wastewater. We collect 24-hour composite wastewater samples from identified sampling locations using a portable refrigerated autosampler. Wastewater collected from the field is transported to the lab on ice. Wastewater is processed and concentrated using a solid-phase extraction setup and a sample concentrator. The wastewater extracts are then analyzed using mass spectrometers. Our lab houses a range of mass spectrometry facilities (LC-MS, GC-MS, and ICP-MS) for analyzing organics and inorganics in community wastewater. We also have a benchtop sample preparation instrument for extracting and purifying DNA, RNA, proteins, and cells, followed by analysis on a digital PCR unit.
